Jetstar moving 40% of $25M budget to social media

Can social media be successfully leveraged? Just ask JetStar.

Airline giant will move 40% of their marketing and advertising budget, worth $25 million per year, on online and social media. There is no surprise in their decision to accept online and social media as being better solution to leverage ticket sales and specials by JetStar. Surprise is quick move from 5%, percentage that as dedicate to online last year, to 40%.

JetStar mean business. Big and profitable business and that is what social media is delivering for them. David May, Head of JetStart PR and Marketing said “We've conducted some very successful marketing and PR campaigns via social media in the past 18 months, including YouTube and Twitter, and the response has been phenomenal."

"The increase in costs of traditional media compared with the audience reach is significantly higher than with social media, where you can potentially reach hundreds of thousands of consumers with the one simple online message - and digital TV isn't filling the gap.”
"It's becoming much harder to reach potential and new customers through broadcast media. We're moving money out of TV and print as they are becoming less effective and others are becoming more effective.”
"It's clear our customers are comfortable in the online space and as JetStar is essentially an online retailer, it makes sense for us to embrace social media outlets. Social media offers more value for money and is a smarter way to reach our customers - which is what Jetstar is all about," May said.

Brave and smart move, which we certainly support. More and more Australian businesses will start leveraging social media and start changing their budget split. If you want quick and cost-effective sale – you cannot pass social media.
